 PORT DISTRICT’S DESIGN|BUILD PROJECT

brings needed cold storage to agricultural region

Strategically located on the Columbia River near Boardman, Oregon, the Port of Morrow port district actively develops properties for the benefit of the local economy. Port of Morrow Warehousing is just such a project.  With several food processing facilities within a 10-mile radius, the Port saw the value in providing cold storage to meet the growing needs of the region.

As a publicly funded agency, the Port is required to award the project to the low bidder. Fisher Construction Group won the design | build project and immediately went to work designing the facility to accommodate both rail and truck loading.

Fisher crews broke ground in November and worked through the wind and cold of a Columbia Basin winter to complete the project in 8 months. Constructed of structural steel and insulated metal panel walls (IMPs), it has an R-value of 44. This type of construction protects the extreme environment inside the facility to within a 2 degree fluctuation.  The refrigeration system components are managed with the new GEA Omni refrigeration control system, providing maximum efficiency and operation through one fully integrated control panel.

The steel fiber reinforced floor makes it possible for the 400 x 275sq. ft. slab floor to have only 5 joints, minimizing a common wear point within the freezer. The facility is 25% racked, leaving the remainder open for free stacking product or future racking, giving the Port the flexibility to store 40 million pounds of frozen food.
