Automation and Higher Density Storage

helps meet increased demand for frozen food distribution

United States Cold Storage (USCS) is driven to provide the best in refrigerated and frozen storage solutions to their food customers. USCS hired Fisher Construction Group as the design-build contractor for their new ASRS high bay cold storage in Atlanta. The expansion of their more than 375 million cubic feet of temperature-controlled warehouse and distribution space.

Fisher’s track record of working with United States Cold Storage on projects in California proved its value as a true design-build partner.

The rack-supported structure provides USCS significant advantages over a conventionally built distribution facility. For example, eliminating the need for internal support columns, the paths through the storage areas are unobstructed. Thus opening for more product storage. Fisher constructed the rack-supported facility beside USCS’s fully operational distribution warehouse in McDonough. The work required precise sequencing of construction activities, while meeting safety, schedule, and budget expectations.

Automated cranes and conveyors store and retrieve products throughout the new facility. The expansive addition has the flexibility of storing products at temperatures ranging from -20° F to 55° F. The 15,000,000 CF of additional space in the USCS Medline facility allows operators to control the temperatures of freezers, mezzanines, and loading docks depending on end-user needs.

The project included building the processing space for USCS’s tenant, Dole Foods. The state-of-art frozen fruit processing area is also fully automated. Equipped with four production lines capable of processing and packaging 60MM pounds of fruit annually. Fisher’s extraordinary level of communication and planning with USCS and Dole was essential in delivering the facility on time and under budget.
